Making cafe-style coffee at home is easier than ever, but the right machine depends on how much control you want and how much time you have each morning. This guide explains the main types and compares the De'Longhi espresso machines we stock.

The main types of espresso machine
- Manual and semi-automatic: you grind, dose and tamp the coffee yourself, and the machine supplies pressure and hot water. The Stilosa, Dedica Style and EC850.M are of this kind. They give you the most control and suit people who enjoy the process.
- Combi machines: the BCO420 makes espresso and drip coffee in one machine, which helps when people at home prefer different drinks. It takes ground coffee and pods and brews up to 10 cups on the drip side.
- Fully automatic bean-to-cup: the Eletta Explore grinds the beans and brews at the touch of a button, with a 300g bean hopper and more than 50 recipes. It is the easiest to use each morning.
What to check on the spec sheet
- Pump pressure: many home machines are rated at 15 bar. This is a maximum pump rating, so look at the build and features too, not pressure alone.
- Water tank: a larger tank means fewer refills.
- Milk frothing: a manual frother gives control, while automatic systems are simpler.
- Cup clearance: make sure your favourite mug fits under the spout.
Do not forget the grinder
Freshly ground beans make a clear difference to taste. If you choose a manual machine, pair it with a grinder such as the De'Longhi KG210, which holds 90 grams of beans and has 3 grind settings. See all coffee grinders.
Care and maintenance
Descale regularly, empty the drip tray, and clean the milk system after each use. Check that the model you choose has removable parts that are easy to rinse.
Frequently asked questions
What does 15 bar mean?
It is the maximum pressure rating of the pump. A machine needs good build and temperature control as well, so do not choose on the number alone.
Which of your machines is the easiest to use?
The Eletta Explore ECAM450.86 is fully automatic: it grinds, brews and offers more than 50 recipes at the touch of a button.
Do I need a separate coffee grinder?
With the manual and combi machines, you can use pre-ground coffee, but fresh grinding improves flavour. A bean-to-cup machine has its own grinder.
